Healer, Healer Thyself
How Do We Heal?
I’m not sure if we are meant to fully heal our wounds or, come to think of it, if it is even possible; after all, Chiron himself (AKA The Wounded Healer) was unable to do so.
When I speak about the work I do, I place it in the context of healing: Healing through Purposeful Movement and Creative Expression.
But how do we actually heal?
Chiron, an asteroid, in the Astrology Natal Chart symbolizes the mythological hero and teacher whose work was to mentor and heal his students; the rub was that he could not heal his own wounds, at least in the version of the story I am familiar with.
Chiron in your Natal Chart symbolizes a point of irrevocable wounding, like the Achilles’ Heal, and the potential to heal those wounds.
But we do not heal, typically, through so-called naval gazing (something I had to learn the hard way); in other words, when you place your attention on your past and the things that hurt or traumatized you and attempt to “figure it all out,” you typically become stuck in the past and those experiences and, inadvertently, expand the emotions and feelings around the original hurt or trauma. This is not to say that making sense of the past and what caused you to close down or become defensive, for example, is not valuable; I think this is an important part of the process, and I also think we can become stuck in this step and never get to the healing part.
What I have come to find is that it is usually through doing some kind of work in the world, i.e., taking the attention off one’s self and working with others, for example if your core wound is abandonment then you might work with others in a capacity that helps them to feel a deep sense of belonging, safety, and self-acceptance. In working with others to facilitate the healing of their wounds, you slowly begin to feel more purposeful, confident, “whole” and free, i.e., you begin to heal.
It’s a process, for sure, and I don’t think we can skip over steps, for example if you are a person who has trouble with self-reflection and you tend to be a do-er, you may need to “sit” with yourself and become connected to your own needs and feelings before you work with others; it’s not a one-size-fits-all formula and it will be a little different for everyone depending on tendencies and traits [take a look at your Natal Chart for that 🙂].
Chiron in Aries or the 1st House
Let’s take a look at Chiron in Aries, as an example, to get an idea of the wounds and healing work you may be faced with, with this placement, and how you might go about integrating these themes into the work you do (if healing is a part of your path).
Chiron in Aries (or 1st House): Believe in Yourself
I was on the Flying Trapeze platform, perfecting a new Trick called Straddle Whip Catch. Although I have natural body awareness, I also have Chiron on the cusp of Taurus (body/senses) and Aries (self/identity), so I grapple with feelings of awkwardness in my own skin and low confidence when it comes to my ability to do things. I did well on the first part of the Trick but hesitated when it came to reaching my arms out in order to catch the hands of the trapeze artist hanging on the bar on the other side of the net, waiting for me. When I returned to the ground, after missing the Catch, my instructor gave me an exercise to practice of extending my arms out powerfully and confidently and opening my hands wide in preparation for the Catch. On the top of the trapeze platform, about to attempt the Trick again, I heard these words float up to me from the landing pit, below: “I believe you in, Nicole.”
Those words meant more to me than I can articulate in words; my whole body and being responded to them. I flowed through the next moves with ease and grace and when I locked hands, this time, with the trapeze artist waiting on the other side of the net for me, I felt pure joy. For maybe the first time in my life, I was as light and sparkly as the stars in the night sky. I felt capable and free.
Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac and reflects our child-like self – the part of us that wants what we want and wants it now. Aries goes for things unapologetically and is often referred to as the pioneer or soldier of the zodiac, which implies that there is a one-sidedness to this sign (some might say, ahem, selfishness) due to the important mission he or she must accomplish. Aries gets the job done. Aries symbolizes one’s identity and one’s body or physicality. Those with Aries strong in their natal charts are often gifted with “body intelligence,” meaning they have a natural understanding and knack for using their bodies in, for example, sports or physical practices such as yoga, martial arts, running, etc.
Given this information, take a moment to ponder what parts of the self and psyche might be affected with Chiron in this sign.
If you guessed your identity or your ability to get things done, you are correct. If you guessed your physical body and your feelings around being active or comfortable in your own skin, you are also correct. Aries is ruled by the planet Mars, which imbues us with motivation, drive, and passion, therefore when Chiron lands in this Sign you may feel a lack of these qualities in your life. Your mission is to develop them through healing the wound, which is likely a wound around your capability, effectiveness, and overall confidence in yourself. It’s about believing in yourself.
With Chiron in Aries, in order to heal your own core wounds you might consider doing some kind of work around helping others to gain skills that will allow them to work through their goals and see progress in their lives, and to therefore gain confidence in themselves. You may also be drawn to guiding others to feel comfortable in their bodies and help them to build skills around body awareness, such as strengthening their core or learning how to throw a ball or dance. If you feel stuck in your life around Chiron in Aries themes (e.g., moving forward, accomplishing goals, self confidence), consider how you might be of service in the world and work with others who are experiencing these same difficulties. It might just be the key to your salvation.
Is Healing an Integral Part of Your Path?
Not everyone feels their wounds as strongly, or feels the need to work with them, so to speak. Our so-called wounds are linked to the symbolism and lessons of the Sign and House Chiron dwells in, in the Natal Chart, as well as the connections or aspects Chiron is making to our personal planets and other important points of the natal chart. You may have what I have heard referred to as a Chironic Chart, meaning that your Chiron makes an aspect to significant placements in your chart, such as your Sun, Moon, or Ascendent. If this is the case, you are likely on the path of the healer and your life revolves around healing, mentoring, and teaching in some form. I’ll go out on a limb and say if you are still reading this Blog, there is a good chance that is the case. 🖤
The great poet Rumi’s poignant words point to the truth that the wound is not something to cover up or hide from, but rather… “the place where the light enters you.”
