It’s About Believing Yourself

Have you seen the hit series Ted Lasso? As I write this, I picture the crooked sign with the blue letters, spelling out Believe, taped above Coach Lasso’s office and how, even after it had been torn up, he patched it back together, never giving up, even when everyone but him assumed his team was done for.

In the Astrological Sky, Chiron has been in the sign of Aries since 2018 and will remain there until 2026.

Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac and reflects your child-like self – the part of you that wants what it wants and wants it now. Aries goes for things unapologetically and is often referred to as the pioneer of the zodiac, which implies that there is a one-sidedness to this sign (some might say, ahem, selfishness) due to the important mission he or she must accomplish. Aries gets the job done.

My cousin Trevor Zegras, an Aries, plays hockey for the Anaheim Ducks; ever since he was small, he had one mission: to play hockey.

Aries symbolizes one’s identity and one’s body or physicality. Those with Aries strong in their natal charts are often gifted with body intelligence, meaning they have a natural understanding and knack for using their bodies in, for example, sports or physical practices such as yoga, martial arts, running, weightlifting, etc. It should be said that not all Aries people play sports or are physically inclined, of course (it depends on other aspects of the natal chart), but it is often a defining characteristic.

Take a moment to ponder what parts of the self and psyche might be affected with Chiron, the symbol of wounding, in this sign.

If you guessed your spark, identity, or ability to get things done, you are correct. If you guessed your physical body and your feelings around being active or comfortable in your own skin, you are also correct.

Aries is ruled by the planet Mars, which imbues us with motivation, drive, and passion, therefore when Chiron lands in this Sign you may feel a lack of these qualities in your life. Your mission is to develop them through healing the wound or vulnerability, which is likely around capability, effectiveness, and overall confidence.

It’s about believing in yourself. Even when no one else does.

Veering

With Chiron in Aries, there can be a triggering of an old wound around the way you view or feel about your self.

With this in mind, it may not be wise to out-and-out quit anything for the time being. If you remove yourself from a painful or difficult situation, especially those that are hitting on ancient feelings of broken-ness, you may feel temporarily relieved, yes, but there is a chance you will wind up reinforcing the root of those dark feelings.

That said, sometimes there is a way to stay on the general course but to veer in a slightly different direction and make a needed change in, say, one’s environment or team.

Take Daniel Jones: most Giants fans have no sympathy for Jones, but I do (empath, here). The amount of pressure he must have felt to perform and the sense of defeat and, perhaps, self-loathing he felt when he was unable to, would be enough to lead to anyone’s undoing.

I have an affinity for the underdog, so I am rooting for Jones. We don’t know if his change of course to the Minnesota Vikings will lead him to success but sitting on the bench, and being excluded from the team, would have undoubtedly broken his spirit. His last memory would have been a failure with the Giants. It was clear something needed to change.

Maybe like Sam Darnold, who had failed in NY, playing for the Jets, and now heads The Minnesota Vikings, which, by the way, is a playoff team, Danny Dimes will find this environment a better fit, too. We will see.

Sometimes, when we aren’t able to thrive in a certain environment for reasons that may be indecipherable to even us, we must make a change to realize the potential that had alluded us.

I’m not sure if we are meant to fully heal our so-called wounds, or if it is even possible but I do believe we can work with them. Chiron himself, the gifted teacher and mentor who helped so many of his students was unable to heal himself. The beloved character of Ted Lasso embodies the Chiron archetype; Lasso suffers unexpected panic attacks despite his ability to be there for everyone else in his life, and remain hopeful in even the bleakest circumstances (something many of us are grappling with now), but Lasso does not break down or self-destruct; he manages to eventually get to the bottom of what is ailing him and to make changes when the time is right that allow him to face, rather than run from, difficult aspects of his life.

Chiron in your Natal Chart symbolizes a point of irrevocable wounding, like Achilles’ legendary heel (note: I had originally typed heal and just caught it), the only part of him not dipped into The River Styx and therefore vulnerable to human suffering, you may not be able to reverse your wound, but on the flip side, you have the potential to work with the wound and use it in an empowering or purposeful way.

The legend of Achilles teaches that you cannot hide from or outrun your vulnerable spots (see Brené Brown’s work for some good insight on this subject). They will catch up with you. But we do not heal, typically, through so-called naval gazing, something I (ahem) learned the hard way; in other words, when you place your attention on your past and the things that hurt or traumatized you and attempt to “figure it all out,” you typically become stuck in the past and those experiences and, inadvertently, expand the emotions and feelings around the original hurt or trauma. This is not to say that making sense of what caused you to close down or become defensive, for example, is not valuable; I think this is an important part of the process, and I also think we can become stuck in this step and never get to the real work.

The Real Work

With Chiron in Aries, you might consider doing some kind of work around helping others to gain awareness or skills that will allow them to work through their goals and see progress in their lives, and to therefore gain confidence in themselves. You may also be drawn to guiding others to feel comfortable in their bodies and help them, in some capacity, to build skills around body awareness, such as strengthening their core or learning how to throw a ball or dance (just some examples). There are many ways of working with people; it doesn’t have to be a traditional or “in-the-box” role; perhaps you write a column (or blogs, like me) or teach online courses that enable people to gain awareness or a skill or, as the show Ted Lasso did for me, open your perspective (and stop taking things so personally).

If you feel stuck in your life around Chiron in Aries themes (e.g., moving forward, accomplishing goals, self confidence), consider how you might do something outside of yourself that connects, in some way, to those themes. For example, if your core wound is abandonment then you might do work around helping others to feel a sense of belonging, safety, and self-acceptance. In doing work (of some sort) to facilitate healing, you slowly begin to feel more purposeful, confident, “whole” and free, i.e., you begin to heal.

Chiron in Your Natal Chart Custom Report

Not everyone feels their wounds as strongly, or feels the need to work with them, so to speak. Our wounds are linked to the symbolism and lessons of the Sign and House Chiron dwells in, in the natal chart, as well as the connections or aspects Chiron makes to your personal planets and other important points of the natal chart. You may have what I have heard referred to as a “Chironic Chart,” meaning that your Chiron makes an aspect to significant placements in your chart, such as your Sun, Moon, or Ascendent. If this is the case, you are likely on the path of the healer and your life likely revolves around healing, mentoring, and teaching in some form.

I’ll go out on a limb and say if you are still reading this Blog, there is a good chance that is the case. 🖤

The great poet Rumi’s words point to the truth that the wound is not something to cover up or hide from, but rather the place in us where the light enters.

In my yoga classes this week, I am teaching around themes of emptying (on the exhale) and Uddiyana bandha (as you draw your belly back toward the spine you contract your abdominal muscles). When we connect to the core of who we are (essence/truth), all that stuff that covers up who we really are (shame, fear, anxiety, you name it) starts to burn away and we get clearer and brighter. This little light of mineI’m gonna let it shine.
